Football / Soccer pitch at the Park is Waterlogged, is there anything I can do myself?

Me and a Friend have decided to make a little football team with a few of our friends from school, there is a little park that nobody uses any more. The ground does get fairly waterlogged when it rains and because we are in the North of England it does it regularly...

When it stops rain after a few days the ground does get very very muddy. At the moment we are just doing a few runs up and down the pitch with our boots at the end of playing a game just to create a few holes in the ground to get the surface dry.

I was just wondering if there is any tips that anyone has got to that can help the ground, that doesn't cost much or nothing at all and that we can do ourselves.

During the Summer we are going to wrtie to the local council to see what they can do to improve the grass, but for now me and a friend are just wanting to help it slightly for a better game each weekend.

Any tips will be nice!

Thank you!

Why not get your whole team (and any family and friends they can muster) to bring along a garden fork - get everyone in a line on the goal line and work up the pitch spiking the soil as deeply as you can with a little wiggle at the deepest the fork will go. This will improve drainage, aerate the soil and relieve compaction. If you can ask the council to mechanically top-dress the grass with lawn sand and a feed application around March/April you'll be on your way to a usable pitch. Good luck to you! :-)
Reply:Seed with rye grass in the fall for a lush green playing field in winter.
