Would like to know some U.K .language terms that .....?

we don't or possibly wouldn't know or use here in the United States? One of them is wheely bins!http://members.aol.com/gavinpaulbinboy/2...

I had to look that one up because of a yahoo question here!

But, what else can you teach us? I know that a Lorry is a truck, a brolly is an umbrella, Rubbers are rain boots,(or wellingtons), a biscuit is a cookie, ices are, sorbet, chips are french fries, crisps are potato chips, treacle is either like molasses, or it is! I know that there are more...please help! also give me any web sites as well! I think that there are many other people on ask yahoo whom would benefit from this , as well!

thank you!

Would like to know some U.K .language terms that .....?
One quite confusing one is that what Americans call the first floor is called the ground floor in the UK, and what they call the second floor is called the first floor here.

It would appear that Americans use the word gravy differently from us too (or at least to cover a wider variety of sources). I have some US friends who were waxing lyrical recently about biscuits and gravy. To British ears, that sounds like what you might call cookies in meat sauce. Mmmm...

Another interesting one is roommate. In the UK, this literally means someone you share a room with. If you share the same house or flat, but have different rooms, we say housemate or flatmate. Oh yeah, flat's another one: what Americans call an apartment.

What else...? Well, pants and suspenders are an old joke. In the UK they mean underpants and garters. Only women and transvestites wear suspenders in Britain. Men wear braces (and a teenager might have a brace on his teeth -- or sometimes braces).

I would add that for lot of Brits, the words cookies and fries are used and mean something different from biscuits and chips. A cookie to me is chewier (and usually larger) than a biscuit, which tends to be crisper, or possibly more crumbly. I would never call what you get from the chip shop fries; but I would call what you get from MacDonalds fries: they're thinner and longer. Chips tend to be chunkier.

And finally, this isn't the same thing, but how come so few Americans have ever heard of leeks? I'd be shocked to meet someone from the UK or Ireland who hadn't, but about 90% of Americans I ask haven't heard of them -- and I'm pretty sure there's no other word for them.
Reply:Jelly (US) is Jam at least it is in Australia so I assume its the same as they have a band called The Jam.

Cotton Candy is fairy floss I dont know if that has anything to do with fairies flossing their teeth with it
Reply:Knickers! - underwear

Roundabout - Rotunda
Reply:Chavs

This is the term for the UK equivalent of a redneck or the typical woman who has 5 kids to different Dads and is on welfare and is only 22! Wears nasty clothes, looks 'trailer park' - no offense to anyone who lives in a trailer.

In Australia we call them Bogans
Reply:candy floss -- cotton candy

dodgems -- fairground bumper cars

knackered -- exhausted

loo -- toilet

pram -- baby carriage
Reply:In a car, the english bonnet is the hood, and the boot is the trunk. The windscreen in the windshield.

To yield on the road is to give way here.

The footpath is the sidewalk

Diaper is a nappy

Biscuit is a cookie

and mmmmmmmmmmm ....

look up here

Hey I'm reading it now ... it's amusing
Reply:It's hard to guess at what you don't know, as we take for granted that everyone knows it.

We call 'aluminum' aluminium; 'sidewalk' is pavement, 'plaid' is checked or tartan and 'obesity epidemic' is 'eating too many pies'. ;-)
Reply:Americans say 'freight train' and Brits say 'goods train' - Americans fill up their car with gas and Brits fill up their car with 'petrol', American men put on their 'prophylactics' before intercourse and British men put on their 'condoms', Americans have their 'trash cans' emptied by the garbage men while Brits have their 'dustbins' emptied by the 'dustmen'. But the difference between jam and jelly has me puzzled. I spread jam on my bread and make jelly as a dessert but I believe Americans spread jelly on their bread and make jello as a dessert. Americans travel 'coach' on the plane but Brits travel 'economy'

Wat does 6 m mean in shoes online?

so i'm trying to buy some rain boots online and all the sizes are like 6 m, 7 m etc so do the shoes come in men sizes or does the m stand for medium?

Wat does 6 m mean in shoes online?
Since W stands for wide, I would assume that M stands for medium :)
Reply:Realistically, in women's shoe sizes, "M" indicates a "B" width.

Before China made 80% of the worlds shoes, they were made in all these widths.

AAAAA--Quin

AAAA----Quad

AAA------Triple A

AA--------Double A

A

B

C

Sorry, but women today are not fitted properly with limited sizes,

N=A or AA

M=B

W=C

In order to compensate for more narrow feet, women are wearing short fitting shoes. This results/will result in lots of back pain and tired feet. The arch is not resting properly on the shank of the shoe, leaving a space/bridge from the heel to the ball of the foot.

In men's sizes, "M" is closer to a "C" width.
Reply:m stands for medium.

w stands for wide

n stands for narrow
Reply:six medium
Reply:it means 6 medium in shoes.

Give solutions as much quickly as possible??

my wife name is Sucheta, she has to go office by a bike or by walking, office is in the village so there is no transport facility ,office is 3 kms interior so she has to go by walking or by her own bike.at present here in India ,very much rainy,so she almost go to office by walking, but there is very much mud %26amp; as well as water on the roads ,so she wants to ask that wether any long rain boots (upto knee size ) for ladies are available in the market or not bcz when she wears a sandal the clothes get wet ,clothes become muddy...

so tell that long gumboots are available for women or not?

Is there may be any skin problem by that gumboots for har legs? Also tell are there any gumboots available whose length is above knee?????

Give solutions as much quickly as possible??
wear a big plastic bag on both legs
Reply:Go to a medical shop and ask for ExtraLarge two Condoms and ask her to wear it when she goes to office. In the evening, if required, you can re-use it for safe sex.No mud please.
Reply:tell her to use a raincoat if she wants to go walking in the rain then mud wouldn't splash on her dress and she wouldn't so wet.
Reply:Yes, in most big cities. They are call gum boots. May be able to by on Internet but size may be a problem, she must make sure it fits well and are easy to walk in they weigh a lot more and she may get tired walking 3 kms in it.

Alternate solution.

She should keep more then one pair.

One at work, that are dry, one at home for indoor use.

One for rainy season to walk in mud.

This was my solution in Bombay rainy season.
Reply:Hi

U'll definately get gum boots upto knees very easily in any gud showroom, but it depends on ur city u r reciding.Gud Luck

Do toddler and kid's shoes use the same sizing scale?

I need someone to answer this who has kids! Someone gave my son a pair of size 5 rain boots, but they seem bigger than his size 5 shoes. He is 18 months. Are there different scales for toddlers vs kids shoes? Thanks!

Do toddler and kid%26#039;s shoes use the same sizing scale?
Yes there are different scales for toddlers and kids shoes. Toddler shoes are 1-13 and then there are kids sizes in the same labeled sizes but much bigger.
Reply:I beleive so there are two scales I think Wen they are babies to toddlers they go by months or days old then when they become kids it is another scale I do not know what that one is but there is a scale measuring device at most shoe stores That is all I know hahaha That is shoe Busness!
Reply:Kid size shoes are adult size shoes. You only have toddler (aka baby) size 1-13 and adult (aka kid/adult) size 1- really big!!! Also to remember that different brands are different sizes thats why we have to try on shoes. Also maybe the boots go over existing shoes???
Reply:oh may a kids size 5 would be a whole lot bigger than a kids size 5, i wear kids size 5 runners and I am 25 so yes to answer your question there is different sizes
Reply:Yes, a toddle shoe size changes every three months until they are around 3-4 years. During the first five years of the child%26#039;s life is the most grow rate. When they reach 5 years, they growth slows down. Measuring a toddler%26#039;s foot size depends on length, balance, width, shape (which changes) how they stand, how they walk, tiptoes or heal to toe. I would take the boots to the shoe store I buy their shoes and ask the sales person to determine if the used shoe fits my toddler or may cause harm. personally, I never allowed my toddler%26#039;s to were used shoes, because their growth is too important and changes every three months.
