Cold Weather Fashion Help!!?

ok, so right now, i live in southern california. i am soon moving to the DC area, and i don't know what to wear when i am going to visit schools. the weather is going to be 40 degrees-ish, possibly raining. i don't need "budget fashionista" help, i just have utterly no clue how to be fashionable in cold weather. are coats appropriate in 40 degree weather? boots? what do you wear in the rain??? how many coats should i bring? popular coat designers? anyone? thank you for your time :)

Cold Weather Fashion Help!!?
The first winter I promise you will not give a damn about fashion. Your cute Heine will be too cold to care.

after you acclimate to the weather short shorts in 35 F weather will do just fine.

I lived in that hell hole for three years.
Reply:No rain boots. Rain boots are bad. Baaaad. You're shoes might get a tad wet, but suck it up. Everyone else does. Pants would be good, with maybe a t-shirt and a sweater. You don't really need a bulky jacket for 40 degree weather. Most people will be running around in sweaters and sweatshirts. Scarves are always cute too, so wear one of those with a sweater, some jeans, and a nice shirt. Regular heels, or sneaks (whatever your preference) will do just fine. =D
Reply:I have always found fleece coats and pants to be quite warming. Rainboots can help alot in the rain and so can raincoats ( bring several raincoats ranging from the plasticy to the hoddies). Definitley have several umbrellas. Ugg boots are quite wrm as well and wear gloves, fleece or leather. Scarves, earmuffs anjd etc. Layer it on. Keep warm : )
Reply:down feather vests are nice looking. And if you wear a hoodie under it it looks great. Also, eskimo or moccasin type boots look cute this time of year. What ever your most comftorable with :)

Problem with MG ZR boot release...can you help?

My 54 reg MG ZR has developed a problem. When it is raining and the car is being driven the boot release activates. The boot does not open fully but rattles as you drive along. It only happens in the rain. It has been into the garage twice but they have failed to rectify the problem. What is the solution? Is it something to do with the boot sealant?

Problem with MG ZR boot release...can you help?
Take it to Halfords as i understand that they are now the approved Rover repairers for the UK now that all Rover Dealers have shut down.

Maybe worth ago!

Reply:The Pokemon seem strong, but the moves aren't to great.
Reply:I've found seed bomb to be much more effective on Torterra than wood hammer, but you'll have to breed to get the move. Unfortunately, Torterra doesn't hold up in uber battles because of it's 4x weakness to ice, and slow speed. Garchomp has the same weakness, but can't be dispatched quite as easily, especially if it is holding a focus sash or choice scarf.

Another alternative for a curse torterra would be a curse swampert. In my experience it holds up better, but it has a similar problem with grass moves.

You have plenty of sweepers, so I'd suggest putting in a defensive pokemon. Blissey is awesome as a staller, as are cresselia and suicune.

One common problem I see with are too many psychic users/types. Mewtwo in particular can do better than psychic/future sight, and plays essentially the same role as your arceus. Calm mind would work wonders on mewtwo.

Kyogre is another consideration, since it works so well with mananphy, and has great defenses. I'd probably take out the attack form deoxys for it.

From the film: Renaissance man. W/ Danny Devito?

from where does that bit come? In the scene in the pouring rain when at night the "boot" says to his D.S. (Gregory Hines): "I/we shall not go quietly into that night . . . " also something to: "Saint Crispens day" I am unable to track in my own books. Please help . . .

From the film: Renaissance man. W/ Danny Devito?
Saint Crispin's Day Speech

from Henry V by William Shakespeare

--------------------------------------...

This day is called the feast of Crispian:

He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,

Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,

And rouse him at the name of Crispian.

He that shall live this day, and see old age,

Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,

And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:'

Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.

And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.'

Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,

But he'll remember with advantages

What feats he did that day: then shall our names.

Familiar in his mouth as household words

Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,

Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,

Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.

This story shall the good man teach his son;

And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,

From this day to the ending of the world,

But we in it shall be remember'd;

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;

For he to-day that sheds his blood with me

Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,

This day shall gentle his condition:

And gentlemen in England now a-bed

Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,

And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks

That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Does that help?
Reply:I thought it was from Shakespeare? I know that they used it as a basis for the speech that the president gave in Independence day at the air field before the attack on the aliens ships. Now I'm curious !lol

Is this good apparel for rafting?

It's a school trip, so it's nothing huge. I don't really have any

outdoor apparel, so I made my own outfit out of clothing I

already have.

- Lulu Lemon pants

- Normal non-cotton shirt

- Windbreaker (waterpoof and all that jazz)

- Two pairs of socks

- Rubber boots

They also provide us with rain pants and a rain jacket.

Good?

Yeah that sounds fine, however you might want to put on what is called a base layer if its going to be cold, for my base layer i wear a specialised long sleeved top but a cotton or whatever one will do the job aswel :)

Statistics questions... help please?

1. a manufacturer of boots plans to conduct an experiment to compare a new method of waterproofing to the current method. the appeareance of the boots is not changed by either method. the company recruits 100 volunteers in Seattle, where it rains frequently, to wear the boots as they normally would for 6 months.at the end of the months, the boots will be returned to he company to be evaluated for water damage. is there a double blind in this problem?

2. you are considering purchasing one of two comparable photocopy machines, A or B. machine A is $10,000 and machine B is $10,500. this department replaces photocopy machines every 3 years. the repair contract for machine A costs 50 per month and covers an unlimited number of repairs. The contract for machine B costs 200 per repair. based on past performance, the distribution of the # of repairs needed over any 1 year period for machine B is as followed

# of repairs:0,1,2,3

probability:.5,.25,.15,.1

which one would you choose and why

Statistics questions... help please?
1. if the person handing out the boots the volunteers does not know if which boots were treated with which water proofing method then both the administrator and the volunteer are "blind" to knowing the method and you have a double blind.

if the person handing out the boots knows which boots have had which treatment and only the volunteers don't know then this is single blind.

2.

First we will find the expected number of repairs for machine B in one year

For any discrete random variable the expectation is:

E(X) = μ = ∑x * P(X = x)

E(number of repairs) =

0 * 0.5 + 1 * 0.25 + 2 * 0.15 + 3 * 0.1

= 0.85

the expected cost of repairs per year for machine B is:

0.85 * $200 = $175 per year

for the three year period we would expect to have a repair cost of 3 * 175 = $525 for machine B

The total expected cost of machine B is thus

10500 + 525 = $ 11025

the total expected cost of machine A is

10000 + 50 * 36 = $ 11800

Machine B is expected to be cheaper in the long run.
Reply:1. I thinkkk that the words either moethod is a double blind... because they were using only 1 method so either method means more than 1 method so it would not make sense

2. i would choose machine B because even if it costs more, we dont have to pay monthly repair fees even if we dont have repairs and it would be cheaper with B because the probability of no repairs per year is more than a repair.

A.) describe a design for this experiment that uses the 100 volunteers. include a few sentences on how it would be implemented.

B.) could your design be double blind? Explain

I already answered it, but was just wondering if anybody had something I missed. Tks guys.

AP Statistics question, need help?
I would explain the whole thing but it takes a long time so i found the solution online since this is a question from the 2002 AP STAT exam. Go to http://www.zerogravityvb.com/Stats/pdf/2...

It's question # 2. It even gives the scoring guidlines of what score you would get .

People might tread on them lol. Thanks.

Shall i wear my ugg like boot things if it is raining today? Also going to a concert they might get ruined??
DONT WEAR THEM IF IT'S RAINING! unless you have waterproofed them. i ruined my first pair by walking home in the rain.
Reply:You should, they are 'ugg'ly any way
Reply:Don't wear them.

Why - because they're hideous things and you'll look stupid
Reply:It depends whhat concert it is.
Reply:keep them at home. wear old trainers or wellies!

I have discovered i can wash mine in the washing machine on a handwash cycle and they come up lovely

Do not wear them as you will regret it as comfy as they are it is not worth having people trample them

i saw a woman pushing a pram yesterday and when i passed her i glanced to look at her bonny baby and she had a pair of UGG boots wrapped up in the pram ! are they really that good or just a 1 min wonder craze ? and have you really bought concert tickets for your UGG boots ? some one help me please.
Reply:if they are proper ugg boots, then i wouldn't wear them outside when it's raining.
Reply:i would leave them at home for both
Reply:If they are fake, who cares, they are cheap enough to replace
Reply:If they are real then take caution, and if they are fake then water might sep through. And for the concert opt. for a comfier option. So its a no for the ugg boots. Enjoy ur concert :)
Reply:ugg boots are ugly dont wear them at all wear a pair of high heels!

Rainboots ok for fashion?

I embrace individuality when it comes to fashion but i've always had a mixed feeling about one thing. rainboots. I hate getting my shoes and heeled boots wet when its raining. Do you think you can some how incorporate rainboots into an outfit and make it look cute? or just suffer the wet bell bottoms? I was thinking if i use plain black boots like biker boots with skinny jeans it might work.. what do you think?

Rainboots ok for fashion?
I know of a girl who wore lime green rainboots with pink polk-a-dots. It may seem outrageous but she really pulled it off! She wore them with regular jeans and it looked good. If you can pull it off, then go for it!
Reply:Yeah they're ok to wear! We men love seeing a girl in Boots and jeans/trousers! there's nothing wrong at all wearing them. very sexy look!
Reply:itll work..y not?
Reply:Get a really unique print or get a designer label for rainboots. Since all they are is rubber, you can get designer rainboots cheap. Burberry and Ralph Lauren make some that people will recognize as designer. Delias and Alloy (both .com) carry cute printed rainboots that would look cool. Biker boots might come off as a little lezzy
Reply:i think they can be very cute - i was going to recommend wearing them over jeans. as long as you wear them confidently and laugh at anyone who stupidly laughs at you, you'll be a trendsetter for sure! don't wear crocs: they may be comfortable, but the holes won't keep your feet dry (and i personally think they are very unattractive). go rain boots!
Reply:umm well they do sel juicy couture ranboots there soo cute i bought like colors black and white there only $300 each and there ver fashionable soo u should get it they sell it at nordstrom!
Reply:you can totally rock rain boots! why not? they look really cute w/ jeans.
Reply:Not really
Reply:Always wear rain gear in the rain. Rain gear is never cool.
Reply:I think you should keep them in your car incase of emergency, then you still have regular shoes too.
Reply:NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they never were in style and they never will be, just dont wear ur most expensive shoes when it rains
Reply:way no whats in style know are croaks
Reply:rainboots really never work, except when yr 3 years old, srry no offense. is it really goin 2 kill u 2 walk around in wet shoes 4 awhile, look around every1 else does
Reply:If you have a knock out body you can wear anything you want, and still be the hit of the ball
Reply:skinny jeans :)

rainboots :(
Reply:hek yess now that u mention it i realy have the urge to go to target and get some rubber duky ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:sure u can... you can start it and have your friends due the same thing.. then you will be in the in crowd
Reply:Totally! If it's cold outside, get a semi-bulky button-up coat that's in the same color range of your boots, and viola! If it's sort of muggy/hot you could try a shirt that ends a little after your elbow.
Reply:Wear them only with blue jean and make it fun. Get a cute matching top or jacket to go with the boots. When you pick out the boots find some that are outrageously YOU! If you love pink, get pink boots. They have some really fun crazy patterns on some also. (See overstock. com) If you love them you will feel good in them and others will see your confidence. Nothing looks better than confidence.

Is the start of this essay any good? Decribe a childhood memory which left you with pleasant memories?

As my mum turned our Rover left onto the long driveway which lead up the hill to our destination, I was sucking air through the hole in a polo whilst winning my weekly battle trying to force my feet down into my riding boots. I looked passed the rain starting to lick the car window at the lambs playing with each other in the lush green grass and at their mothers suspiciously giving us the eye as we crawled past them and pulled into the carpark. My mum switched off the engine, cutting the Moody Blues off in their tracks and I excitedly flung open the door and leapt straight into a deep puddle which just seemed to be sitting there waiting to for me to churn up the mud and dust hidden beneath its surface.

“Jo” I yelled excitedly whilst waving in her direction, trying to catch the attention of my riding instructor, who had been teaching me for the last 5 months. “Hello Anna, hello Denise” came her no nonsense response, in her thick Northumberland tones,

Is the start of this essay any good? Decribe a childhood memory which left you with pleasant memories?
This is some really great writing! I hope you don't mind my input, but I've offerred some suggestions... just some punctuation changes really. (Me and my uni friends help each other out with proof-reading all the time). The stuff in brackets [ ] is where I've recommended changes... you can take em or leave em. Good luck with it : )

[As mum turned left into our long driveway] which lead up the hill to our destination, I was sucking air through the hole in a polo whilst winning [the battle of forcing] my feet down into my riding boots. I looked ["through?" or past - not passed] the rain starting to lick the car window at the lambs playing with each other in the lush green [grass. Their] mothers suspiciously [gave us the eye] as we [crawled past them - did you really crawl, like on the ground? = drove would be better] and pulled into the carpark. [Mum] switched off the engine, cutting the Moody Blues off in their tracks and I excitedly flung open the [door. I leapt] straight into a deep puddle which just seemed to be sitting there waiting for me to churn up the mud and dust hidden beneath its surface.

“Jo” I yelled excitedly [delete=whilst waving in her direction], trying to catch the attention of my riding instructor, who had been teaching me for the last 5 months. “Hello Anna, hello Denise” came her no nonsense response, in her thick Northumberland tones,

“[G]o and tack up Twinkle, we’ll be riding out shortly, and don’t shout around the horses young lady!” she scolded [delete=me]

“and put your riding hat on!” added [delete="my" this makes it sound more personal, and we already know you're talking about your mum] mum as she followed Jo into the porta cabin that was used as the office.

[this next sentence is a little too long, maybe break it up into two?] I walked through the small rectangular yard in which small puddles of spring showers were starting to gather, the drains blocked up with tiny bits of hay and straw, past the grey stone mounting block on my left which Twinkle would never stand still at and which a fortnight ago I had slipped off, bruising my confidence more than anything else. I crept silently through the open door into the C shaped stable block, not wanting to break the calm quiet in which all I could hear was the heavy breathing of the few horses who were in their stables. [%26lt;=really good!]

My eyes adjusted to the inadequate glow cast by the low voltage light bulbs, which was helped only by the shafts of light breaking in from outside through the gaps in the [wood. Particles] of dust could be seen flying about before becoming invisible [again as they passed] into the shadows. The atmosphere was warmer than outside[,] and the air was thick with [a] musty smell of straw mixed with manure. The sweet scent of sugar beet stood out the most amongst all the other combined smells[.] [maybe delete="of the many horse products I had to remember the uses for." or make another sentence]. I passed the feed room on my left, [delete=and] then the tack room a little further up, and made my way past empty boxes to the right. Straight ahead of me ['Mouse' =needs single inverted commas], an American Palomino was tearing at the hay in his hay net[. He didn't acknowledge] my presence as I walked passed him and turned into the middle corridor of the stable block where the light was even dimmer than before.

[That's really cool, I'm impressed. Make sure you keep writing, you're very creative. Also, feel free to email me if you ever want a hand proof-reading : ]
Reply:iliked it thank you .
Reply:Darling, that's fabulous.....

No really. Although the general rule with sentence construction is: " Don't make it longer than you can say in one breath."

In this case, the frantic overdetailed narrative gives a sense of excitement and breathlessness.

Well done Darling....
Reply:Its "Past" not "passed".

It also sounds better to put the adjective after the verb, ie " I flung open the door, excitedly", although thats a matter of personal taste.

The sentences are a little long. You have to think how easy it would be to read aloud in front of the class. You'd be gasping for breath! You could shorten them ie

"My mum turned our Rover left onto the long driveway which lead up the hill to our destination. I was sucking air through the hole in a polo whilst slowly winning my weekly battle. Trying to force my feet down into my riding boots was not easy. . ." etc

Other than that its fantastic! Very descriptive and evocative (I can smell the stableyard and the leather of the saddles and hear the Moody Blues! lol)

Make sure you address all the senses in your account - ie sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. How did the Polo taste? Cool, Minty, Sweet? Did it make your mouth water? Did you wash it down with some crisp bubbly spring water which burned on your tongue, already sensitised from the mint?

What could you smell - stableyards have a distinctive smell! The warm sweaty smell of the horses, the sweet pungent smell of the manure pile, the salt of the leather in the tack room, the strong scent of the saddlesoap?

What could you hear? The contented munching of the horses in their stalls? The rhythmic thumping of Conker kicking inpatiently against his stable door? The excited chatter of your friends as they pulled on their boots?

Touch - what did your boots feel like? Rough, smooth? Were you holding your riding crop, how did that feel? Did you pat your favourite horse as you passed? How did his neck feel? Warm, damp etc? What was the weather like? Cold crisp autumnal morning or a balmy spring evening?

The point I'm getting at is the most evocative writing does not just tell us what is going on, it prompts us to use our imaginations to experience everything in the story, with all of our senses. you've already given us a few clues - the rain on the windows and lush green grass (sight), the Moody Blues on the stereo (sound), the Polo (taste), now just expand it a bit further!

Good luck and post the finished version - we'd love to read it!!!
Reply:I think it is very good. You have a good writing talent and it is very descriptive. Hope you get a good grade on it. Keep going with your writing and who knows where it will take you in life!
Reply:I like it!
Reply:lol hurry up and finish it i wanna read the rest !!! its really good xx
Reply:not sure if you think ok go for it
Reply:I feel that some of the impact is lost because of the long sentences at the start. For example, I would end the first sentence after 'destination'. 'I sucked thoughtfully at a Polo trying to draw air through that hole in the middle.' 'It was raining pretty heavily by now as I battled with my weekly task.....' 'All of a sudden I felt a reassuring sound as the second boot fell into place around my ankle.'

Grammar is an awful thing. Check whether you mean 'onto' or 'into', 'lead' or 'led' 'passed' or 'past' and whether you are using conjunctions to join two completely different thoughts.

BUT it's a good start that can have a great deal more impact.
Reply:Very good desciption going on here, but you need to introduce the characters before going into depth. This is more like chapter 2 rather than an intro.
Reply:Yes, I enjoyed it - full of detail and I could visualise everything
Reply:That's not bad. A little tweaking and it would look quite professionally done.

What should i wear to a concert?

i'm going to the spice girls reunion tour...what should i wear?

the weather report is a high of 58 degrees and a low of 49 degrees and theres a chance of rain. i have black suede boots, chesnut uggs, jeans, jackets, leggings, etc. (don't have a spice girls t-shirt though...)

what do you suggest i wear?

What should i wear to a concert?
i'm going too! i think you should wear something comfortable. it's gonna be a long night and it's gonna be crowded. i think you should wear jeans and a long sleeve with comfortable shoes. uggs might be good.

dark wash skinny jeans

a white tee shirt or a cute tee with a cool design

a black vest

totally rocker chick

do like smokey eyes for makeup

and do your hair totally funky

Well personally i would go for simplicity.

Have you ever seen something..?

have you ever seen something really embarass happen to a stranger and you felt sooo sorry for them!!!

i was in town one day and a girl was walking out of the shopping centre and she walked over a grate. her heel got stuck in it, and she couldnt move.... she had to take off her boot, stand in the rain in with one boot on and just her sock on the other foot, and ask a stranger to get help from the shopping centre security. she had to stand there for about ten minutes and i could just feel the embarrasment for her.. The heel was destroyed on the boot in the end...

the poor girl!! it was soooo funny though at the same time!!

what are your stories?

Have you ever seen something..?
My niece is beautiful and a swim suite model. One day she was in her drive way washing her car and a guy driving by couldn't take his eyes off her and ran his car into a pole totalling his car !! He was really embarrassed and never even got to talk to my niece because he was to busy dealing with the police and explaining what happened!!

How do you clean suede?

I wore a pair of camel colored suede boots out in the rain and now they have a bunch of water stains on them. ( the marks look like little soiled spots) Is there ANY way to clean/fix them?...or even just possibly improve them a little bit?....any household remedies, cleaners, techniques, etc?

How do you clean suede?
Go to WAL-MART get KIWI suede and nubuck cleaner and protector they are 2 cans the cleaner has a brush on top this worked for my boots when dye from my pants got on them. I hope this can help and good luck
Reply:unless it said washable, don't do it. take it to a professional only. You might want to try a suede brush.

Emergency fashion question!!!?

I had an outfit planned, a red shirt, short black skirt and black knee high boots. Forecast calls for rain. Can I save this with some black stockings, and if so, which are in fashion right now? Opaque or sheer??? Thanks!

Emergency fashion question!!!?
Opaque! It balances out the shortness of the skirt.
Reply:up to you!!
Reply:just open a few more buttons on the blouse and let those young breast be free and no one will notice the stocking issue.
Reply:sheer. but maybe you could just go with some really cute jeans.
Reply:sheer but i wouldnt wear stockings with boots.
Reply:Sheer, sheer and sheer, they are always more dressy and sexy, especially if in stockings and not pantyhose. Opaque is for little kids and old ladies. the opaqueness hides the blemishes and veins on their skin. shinny and sheer is always more classic and sexy.
Reply:personally i would do sheer with fish net with it but up to you
Reply:try skincoloured stockings
Reply:Opaque are kind of casual. If its a dressier look you want, sheer black stockings are always the best choice. Nothing looks dressier and sets off any outfit like very seer black stockings.
Reply:Go with some fishnets. They'll make you look great, as long as the skirt isn't too short. If it is, your look may tip the fashion see-saw over to slutty.
Reply:i would go with the small fish net design stockings, that would look really cute with your outfit! :)

What do I need to take with me when I move to Houston this summer?!?!?

I live in Southern California right now and will be moving to Houston this summer for law school (South Texas College of Law). I've heard the summers are very hot and humid and that there are also lots of thunderstorms with crazzzzzy rain!

My sister's friend said that I should take tall boots, because when it rains, its floods and I'll get water in my shoes! I'll be living around the downtown/Midtown area. You think it's really that bad? Do you think I'm gonna need a super duper strong umbrella? I'll just die if my books get wet!!!

If there's anything else you think I'll need in Houston, please let me know! Thanks! :o)

What do I need to take with me when I move to Houston this summer?!?!?
April is usually the greatest weather month in Houston along with maybe October. June is statisticly the wettest month with July a close second. Thus the extreme humidity making a 92 degree day feel like 105! Though these showers are usually limited to when it gets real hot and gulf showers develope around 3-5 in the afternoon, not all day. Bring plenty of shorts and tank tops maybe. Take in a few games at Minute Maid park, enjoy the walks in the park, if you like golf you will love it here. And as the rest of us, PRAY FOR NO HURRICANES THIS YEAR!!!
Reply:If someone tells you that you need tall boots they have never ever been to Houston! It SOMETIMES floods in areas, but unless you are planning to go walking through the flood, which would be silly, you wont need them. It wont flood in the area you will be in.

You need an umbrella anywhere you live! A regular one will be just fine.

Plan on bringing all the things you use in California... you don't need anything special!
Reply:Geta backpack for your books. Scotchguard it.

As for umbrellas, they are of limited use. Some of the afternoon "showers" are accompanied by 50 knot winds. Then the sun is shining fifteen minutes later and all you're left with is puddles and humidity.

Tall boots will be of limited use. If you know you will be going out on a rainy day to school, wear tennis shoes or flip flops.
Reply:Umbrella, good shoes--and lots of drinking water, lol. May want to get flood\natural disaster insurance as well. Sunscreen, hat\cap, mosquito repellents, cold weather and warm weather and in-between weather clothes! "If you don't like the weather in TX, wait five minutes, it'll change!"
Reply:Flip flops are better than boots. Boots are too hot. A normal umbrella will be fine. You may want it to be compact so you can stick it in your purse because you never know when the rain will strike. Just bring everything you would use in Cali. Sunglasses, sunscreen, tank tops, shorts, bathing suit. Summer staples at it's best! Welcome to Texas and good luck with school!
Reply:A good backpack and a normal, folding umbrella and you will be fine. Mosquito spray might come in handy too.

It is horribly hot and humid in the summer but everyone has blasting air conditioners so you might want to bring a light sweater!

It is gorgeous here today. We are supposed to have a high of 80 with no humidity.
Reply:last summer it rained 95% of the time. it was the wettest summer i can remember. it sucked. it does rain a lot and houston is flood and hurricane prone. i noticed that you post a lot of questions here. i know one was about renting an apt in houston so i know this may be a bit off the subject and i dont know if anyone has mentioned it yet but i would also suggest you get rental insurance for your apt. it can come in handy here in houston. good luck
Reply:You don't need tall boots, and you will rarely need an umbrella... Actually the rainy season is April, during the summer you will be PRAYING for rain, it get so hot... you will need SUNCREEN, your bathing suit, and lots of shorts and tank tops... or and red bull to study
Reply:OMG I'm from San Diego and I moved to Houston, TX 2 years ago. I hated it!!! Good luck! Other people already answered your questions sooo there's no point on telling you what to bring, lol.

PS Oh and watch out for bad drivers!
Reply:GRL let me juz sai ull experience all four seasnz in a day
Reply:bring an airboat, and a Hummer
Reply:Flip flops are your best bet. I don't feel like it rains all that much, but flip flops are perfect for hot, humid weather AND rain. Just make sure your flip flops don't get all slippery when your feet get wet, thats always a nightmare.. Boots are a really bad idea, the idea of wearing boots in the summer here makes me want to die. It's way too hot and sticky for boots! And umbrellas have always been more of a hassel to me because the distances from your car to a covered area are so small that its not even worth getting the umbrella out, and you get more wet hanging out of your car and trying to open it.

Considering you're going to be living in the downtown area.. I would consider getting some pepper spray. It can be kind of dangerous and you want to be on the safe side..
Reply:Houston is, indeed, very hot and steamy. You'll want lots of casual clothes. T-shirts, shorts. Midtown is the most walker-friendly neighborhood of Houston, so take some good walking shoes as well.

Houston does have more than its share of heavy rain and thunderstorms. For all the years I lived there though, I never owned any rubber boots. Some cheap Walmart sneakers are fine. You can hose them out and dry them by hanging them outside the window so that's what I recommend.

A strong but lightweight umbrella (the kind you can fold up and put in your purse or backpack) is definitely a good investment. You'll want to carry it with you everywhere since you never know when there'll be a tropical downpour.

Houston's a great place for food. Just about every genre is present. Midtown has some particularly nice Vietnamese options. Mai's on Milam is fantastic an surprisingly affordable. Langford's (tucked away on a little side street off Bagby near Westheimer) has the to-die-for burgers and their enchiladas are an institution.

The Montrose neighborhood is close by with its gay chic and nightlife. My two favorite all-time restaurants are in the Montrose: Katz's Deli, New York kosher food with a Texas twist (the Rueben is stupendous and the Strawberry Cheesecake milkshake is marketed as "A Heart Attack In A Glass"); and, Niko Niko's, the best Greek food outside of Athens. The lemon chicken soup will knock your socks off and the Philly Cheesesteak is legendary. The late Marvin Zindler (restaurant cleanliness critic extrordinaire) had Niko Niko's perpetually on his list of cleanest and most delicious places to dine in all of Houston (Marvin was, incidentally, something of a local legend. He's the reporter that broke the story of the Chicken Ranch, a brothel located a short drive away in Sealy and LaGrange, Texas. In the movie, "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas," Marvin's character was portrayed by none other than Dom DeLouise. The Chicken Ranch, by the way, since relocated to Pahrump, Nevada, outside of Vegas, where it operates LEGALLY to this very day).

You'll also have access to the light rail, so can probably avoid driving most of the time if you really want to. However, Houston is built for drivers so to go exploring, you just HAVE to have a car.

Car insurance tends to be quite expensive in Texas. Be prepared for that. But gas is a little cheaper in Texas than it is in California (though maybe not as much as you'd think).

Galveston, the nearest beach city - about an hour south - is a fun day trip. There's interesting old architecture and you can almost feel time slow down when you go over the causeway. Just don't expect great beaches. The water in this part of the Gulf is pretty murky (it's not necessarily polluted, it's just a very rainy area and lots of mud washes into the ocean here). Also, Austin's only about 3 hours away and is everything Houston isn't: beautiful, quirky, liberal, hilly, fun and fashionable with more live music venues than New York City. Look out for the bumper stickers that say "Keep Austin Weird."

Finally, don't be shocked when you start seeing the "W 2004" bumper stickers here and there. They're not nearly as common as they used to be considering Bush's nose-dive in the polls, but some high-haired old Republican types still have them tacked onto their Suburbans and F-150s and will be voting reich-wing come hell or high water.

Enjoy!

It's not that bad! Sure sometimes it rains...sometimes it rains hard....but nobody wears rainboots. It does get hot and sometimes humid, but that's when you see people out at the pool or beach, or cooped up inside with the a/c
Reply:This is easy cause I live in Houston, Texas :) For summer, you should take some sunscreen, shorts, t-shirts, a thin jacket, some joggin pants or jeans, and if it rains, and umbrella, you can wear shoes, but boots can be okay. But you can put your books in like a bag or something, but it will be really hot in summer.
Reply:It does get very hot and humid in the summer, but the good thing about that is that it delays you getting wrinkles. No, you don't need rain boots even though the thunderstorms do get a little crazy. And use a backpack for your books. It's really not that bad, there's AC everywhere you go so it shouldn't be a problem. Good luck.

Should our school give out uniforms but the uniforms are going to be different then other uniforms?

Our uniforms would be Girls will wear white overalls with a white denim jacket. Boys Will wear blue overalls with no jacket. When it rains girls MUST wear a pink rainsuit with pink boots and a pink Poncho. Boys MUST wear a Blue rainsuit with blue boots and a blue rain poncho. DO U THINK THIS IS FAIR?

Should our school give out uniforms but the uniforms are going to be different then other uniforms?
heck no
Reply:I used to go to a school that wore uniforms, but they were better looking than the descriptions of ur uniforms... It's only fair if the uniforms look good.
Reply:No it's not fair. I used to go to a private school, and I hate uniforms. they as people say, don't give you a mind of your own. Anyways, what if some girls don't like pink? I know tons of people! And overalls??? No way!

Listen. Take the Army boots off and put on some real great shoes and the dress up like great and get out of the rain. There are many places you can go out of the rain and meet people.

Car Misfiring - water + spark plugs?

Hi,

I have a 2003 tiburon that is supercharged (water cooled) with a cai.

I was driving yesterday in a pretty bad rainstorm and about 2 minutes from home, my car started to misfire. Got it home, read the code and it said there was a problem with cylinder 4.

Took that boot out and there is a little water in there, checked # 2 and there is a little in that one too. Number 6 had a lot of water in it. I dried it all out and everything seems fine now. I have new (1 step colder) spark plugs to put in it, im just wondering what could of caused this? I have a c/f hood and unfortunately one of the vent seems to dump the rain right on the boots, but shouldn't they stop the water? They were sealed (little pop).

Also what would cause corrusion in there? I know i'm running rich right now, but I'm getting re-tuned in a month.

thanks in advance.

Car Misfiring - water + spark plugs?
I think you answered your own question. Maybe that paticular spark plug did not crush its sealing ring quite enough and allowed water to intrude. reinstall spark plugs and ddcheck the tourqe.

If you havnt changed the plugs you could always use the garden hose to see if you could reproduce the problem.

If you are talking about corrosion on your plug itself, it happens. Depending on grade of plug. should also only be on the wrench area. Anywhere on the sorrounding engine block is a concern.
Reply:you may try spraying the wires with spray silicon. this will help to repel the water so it will not soak in the rubber. what you are experiencing is what we in the south call "drowning out a vehicle". we play in water and mud a lot down here and experience this a lot but if you spray the silicon on the electrical system we find it works well.
Reply:the leak is probably the problem with it,if there s no anti freeze missing from it,and that was all it was ,id say you,ll be ok on it,and the hotter plugs might help it a little, the tune up will probably take care of the rich running problem in it,good luck with it.,,PS its probably going to do this every time it rains though until you get the leak fixed on it.
Reply:Its possible that the water might have seeped in past your injector o-rings. Or like you said the spark boots. You are going to have to fabricate something to keep water out of that area. The corrosion is most likely due to the water.
Reply:no it is not stopping the rain. it is just like vw problem where water gets in the airtube near the innner cooler...... what i would do is find away to really make it water proof

What else should i pack for summer camp ??
I would bring a small fleece blanket (you can make one). If you go outside/sit around a campfire, you can wrap it around you and not worry about getting it dirty-it can easily be washed.

As you've probably heard also, dress in layers. You might want to bring layers like tank-tops, t-shirts, vests, light sweatshirts, and windbreakers. According to what kind of weather you have, you can just peel a couple layers off, or add a couple.
Reply:i don't think you should bring more things.all i want to tell you is to write your name on all of your stuffs.for your clothes sew your name..if you failed to do so,you might bring home lesser things than you bring from home..

Last poem for the evening, so you know it's gonna be dark. Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Coments welcome as you know.

Hallowed ground

The altar shined like burnished wood,

I look upon it, Satan just once stood.

To him and the coven, we need virgins blood,

On our search the rains did come, boots grow heavy with the mud.

Through the night, we watched and waited,

So soon our master , would be mated.

We have our Virgin, clean and pure,

On this night of nights, I must be sure.

We tie her to the altar by moon light,

Her bright green eyes, filled with pure fright.

Hush little virgin, I beesech thee now

your home's in hell, we'll show you how.

She screamed, she fought, with all her might

The darklord himself looked at the sight.

Dagger exposed, above her left breast,

It won't be now my love, eternal rest.

Washington DC - Philadelphia tourist advice?

I'll be visiting the area in about 2 weeks! What should I NEED to bring along? Hats? Gloves? Windbreakers? And will I need waterproof hiking boots? Does it rain everyday? Snow? Please give me some advice!

Thx for your help.

Washington DC - Philadelphia tourist advice?
You won't need waterproof hiking boots if your just going into the city. Its been anywhere from 30-50 degrees here in D.C. I would bring pants and sweaters and a coat. You might want to bring a lighter jacket too, it does not rain that often, though now i say that it will rain everyday haha, probally once or twice a week it rains, if that. It may snow, but it hasn't been much in the 4 years ive been in D.C.
Reply:Weather here changes CONSTANTLY

That being said, we don't usually get too much snow, and you probably won't need waterproof hiking boots....go with layer-ables and a packable rain jacket and you should be fine

Can someone please re-phrase these 2 sentences so they can make sense?

There was no sound, apart from the sound of Mona’s boots and heavy rain, both clashing on the pavement.

There was no light, apart from the light of the moon which would look down upon the earth with its fellow stars by its side.

Can someone please re-phrase these 2 sentences so they can make sense?
There were no sounds apart from the clashing of Mona's boots and heavy rain on the pavement, and no light, except from the moon and its fellow stars looking down upon the earth.
Reply:Besides Mona's boots and the heavy rain clashing on the pavement, there was no sound.

There was no light, except the light of the moon, which looks down upon the earth with its fellow stars by its side.
Reply:how about

with only the sound of her footsteps and the pounding rain piercing the utter silence, Mona wandered through the treacherous storm, as she struggled to see the sidewalk with what little moon light there was to guide her.

how was that?
Reply:The street was quiet, except for the sound of the heavy rain and Mona's boots on the pavement. The only illumination was moonlight and starlight.
Reply:Except for the sound of Mona's boots and the heavy rain clashing on the pavement, there was no sound.
Reply:The only sound besides Mona's boots was the heavy rain clashing on the pavement.

Only the light of the moon looked down on the earth with the stars beside it.
Reply:Aside for the sound of Mona's boots clashing on the pavement through the heavy rain, there was no other sound.

The only light was form the moon which would look down upon the earth with its fellow stars by its side.
Reply:There's a lot of things you could do with these. Depends on what is framed around it. Whenever you come to a point like this, think of it like a photo, what frames it, what is it supported by, and where will you hang it. For instance with the first sentence. Is she thinking?

~ Her mind was already clouded. Her thoughs as harsh as her heels scuffing the concrete. Her body felt like concrete, rough, heavy, walked on.

Is she sad?

~ The rain was of no help. The sound of her boots pounding on the grounds surface in perfect timing with the rain drug her down even more. She hated rain.

Is somone following her?

~ She was perfect, her stride, her body, everything. The rain made her look untouchable, falling all around her, the steady pace of her heels agains the sidewalk making her stand out from his dreams. Making her real. If she was real he could touch her, hold her, smell her. He could have her.

You cant have sound and silence at the same time. For instance "Aside from the sound of monas boots it was silent" It's not silent. . . there is sound. You can interupt silence or break it but you can't have both .

See....it all depends on the "frame"

Reply:The sound of the heavy rain against Mona's boots clashed with the pavement's.

The sister moon looked on the fellow stars by her side, as they shown on mother earth in an artless light.
Reply:The only sounds were Mona's boots and the heavy rain, clashing on the pavement.

The moon, looking down upon the earth with its consort stars by its side, was the only light.
Reply:Apart from the rhythmical sound of Mona’s boots meshing with the heavy rain on the pavement, there was a blissful silence.

The ally was dark, and if not for the glare of the moon which looked down upon the earth with its fellow stars by its side, there would be no light.
Reply:Apart from the sound of Mona's boots and the heavy rain clashing on the pavement, there was no sound.

The light of the moon and stars peered down at the Earth, on the otherwise seemingly dark night (or sky).
Reply:Only the sound of Mona's boots and the heavy rain clashing on the pavement could be heard.

The only light was that of the moon and its fellow stars shining down upon the earth.

Who lives close to Orchards Elementary School in WA?
Used to live near there...lots of snow, you're in the Rocky Mountains with lots of pine trees, hills, mountains and a river (which means lots of moisture in the air)...haha...you might want to get some snowshoes!!

The rain that you hear about in Washington state is 300 miles west in the Puget Sound area near Seattle and Bremerton on the ocean. You're a world away from there!!
Reply:I dont buy into your being a child asking about an elemetry school...too weird.Ask your "parents" to find out. thanks for the points.

Hey i have clothes ?

its suppose to be 54 tomorrow in oklahoma with 40% chance of rain if i wore ugg boots will the rain ruin the shoes

Hey i have clothes ?
No, I wear my uggs in the snow and all that. They are made great and are of awesome quality, after all, you get what you pay for!!!
Reply:probably.
Reply:most likely yes you would be better off with flats or sneakers in the rain esp. if its raining cats and dogs
Reply:nope it def. won't ruin them i wear mine in rain all the time! %26lt;3

What do you think of this story? What would your response to it be?

This story was made in1977.

The Nightmare Life Without Fuel

Americans are so used to limitless energy supplies that they can hardly imagine what life might be like when the fuel really starts to run out. So TIME asked Science Writer Isaac Asimov for his vision of an energy-poor society that might exist at the end of the 20th century. The following portrait, Asimov noted, "need not prove to be accurate. It is a picture of the worst, of waste continuing, of oil running out, of nothing in its place, of world population continuing to rise. But then, that could happen, couldn't it?"

So it's 1997, and it's raining, and you'll have to walk to work again. The subways are crowded, and any given train breaks down one morning out of five. The buses are gone, and on a day like today the bicycles slosh and slide. Besides, you have only a mile and a half to go, and you have boots, raincoat and rain hat. And it's not a very cold rain, so why not?

Lucky you have a job in demolition too. It's steady work.

Slow and dirty, but steady. The fading structures of a decaying city are the great mineral mines and hardware shops of the nation. Break them down and re-use the parts. Coal is too difficult to dig up and transport to give us energy in the amounts we need, nuclear fission is judged to be too dangerous, the technical breakthrough toward nuclear fusion that we hoped for never took place, and solar batteries are too expensive to maintain on the earth's surface in sufficient quantity.

Anyone older than ten can remember automobiles. They dwindled. At first the price of gasoline climbed—way up. Finally only the well-to-do drove, and that was too clear an indication that they were filthy rich, so any automobile that dared show itself on a city street was overturned and burned. Rationing was introduced to "equalize sacrifice," but every three months the ration was reduced. The cars just vanished and became part of the metal resource.

There are many advantages, if you want to look for them. Our 1997 newspapers continually point them out. The air is cleaner and there seem to be fewer colds. Against most predictions, the crime rate has dropped. With the police car too expensive (and too easy a target), policemen are back on their beats. More important, the streets are full. Legs are king in the cities of 1997, and people walk everywhere far into the night. Even the parks are full, and there is mutual protection in crowds.

If the weather isn't too cold, people sit out front. If it is hot, the open air is the only air conditioning they get. And at least the street lights still burn. Indoors, electricity is scarce, and few people can afford to keep lights burning after supper.

As for the winter—well, it is inconvenient to be cold, with most of what furnace fuel is allowed hoarded for the dawn; but sweaters are popular indoor wear and showers are not an everyday luxury. Lukewarm sponge baths will do, and if the air is not always very fragrant in the human vicinity, the automobile fumes are gone.

There is some consolation in the city that it is worse in the suburbs. The suburbs were born with the auto, lived with the auto, and are dying with the auto. One way out for the suburbanites is to form associations that assign turns to the procurement and distribution of food. Pushcarts creak from house to house along the posh suburban roads, and every bad snowstorm is a disaster. It isn't easy to hoard enough food to last till the roads are open. There is not much in the way of refrigeration except for the snowbanks, and then the dogs must be fought off.

What energy is left cannot be directed into personal comfort. The nation must survive until new energy sources are found, so it is the railroads and subways that are receiving major attention. The railroads must move the coal that is the immediate hope, and the subways can best move the people.

And then, of course, energy must be conserved for agriculture. The great car factories make trucks and farm machinery almost exclusively. We can huddle together when there is a lack of warmth, fan ourselves should there be no cooling breezes, sleep or make love at such times as there is a lack of light—but nothing will for long ameliorate a lack of food. The American population isn't going up much any more, but the food supply must be kept high even though the prices and difficulty of distribution force each American to eat less. Food is needed for export so that we can pay for some trickle of oil and for other resources.

The rest of the world, of course, is not as lucky as we are.

Some cynics say that it is the knowledge of this that helps keep America from despair. They're starving out there, because earth's population has continued to go up. The population on earth is 5.5 billion, and outside the United States and Europe, not more than one in five has enough to eat at any given time.

All the statistics point to a rapidly declining rate of population increase, but that is coming about chiefly through a high infant mortality; the first and most helpless victims of starvation are babies, after their mothers have gone dry. A strong current of American opinion, as reflected in the newspapers (some of which still produce their daily eight pages of bad news), holds that it is just as well. It serves to reduce the population, doesn't it?

Others point out that it's more than just starvation. There are those who manage to survive on barely enough to keep the body working, and that proves to be not enough for the brain. It is estimated that there are now nearly 2 billion people in the world who are alive but who are permanently braindamaged by undernutrition, and the number is growing year by year. It has already occurred to some that it would be "realistic" to wipe them out quietly and rid the earth of an encumbering menace. The American newspapers of 1997 do not report that this is actually being done anywhere, but some travelers bring back horror tales.

At least the armies are gone—no one can afford to keep those expensive, energy-gobbling monstrosities. Some soldiers in uniform and with rifles are present in almost every still functioning nation, but only the United States and the Soviet Union can maintain a few tanks, planes and ships—which they dare not move for fear of biting into limited fuel reserves.

Energy continues to decline, and machines must be replaced by human muscle and beasts of burden. People are working longer hours and there is less leisure; but then, with electric lighting restricted, television for only three hours a night, movies three evenings a week, new books few and printed in small editions, what is there to do with leisure? Work, sleep and eating are the great trinity of 1997, and only the first two are guaranteed.

Where will it end? It must end in a return to the days before 1800, to the days before the fossil fuels powered a vast machine industry and technology. It must end in subsistence farming and in a world population reduced by starvation, disease and violence to less than a billion.

And what can we do to prevent all this now?

Now? Almost nothing.

If we had started 20 years ago, that might have been another matter. If we had only started 50 years ago, it would have been easy.

What do you think of this story? What would your response to it be?
I think it is a very mild projection i would have thought i might be much worse .

The aspects of a global nuclear war or the full effects of Global warming have not been included.

Such as rising seas ,which could displace millions of people ,moving them further in land ,to fight it out with the residents already there causing wide spread public violence.

Also global food and potable water shortage ,and we have since come up with many alternatives to producing power ,why did he leave out solar or wind power.

But then this story was from 1977,and even so Asimov is a master at imagining future happenings

I wonder what he would see today ,it will be a different story.

.-------------------------------------...

The solution to a world devoid of energy is to think backwards and improve upon it .This is what Permaculture is all about sustainable ideas from the past (only in the past can prove of sustainability be found )

So my response is teach the people about PERMACULTURE a way of life using ingenuity and innovation with limited technology or dependence on Government energy sources, derived from a collection of sustainable ideas from around the world coupled to present level of knowledge

ideally suited for those who want to get back to the country and build a auto sufficient situation for themselves and the family or a community .

People plant rather for the quality of life and to feed their families, than for the market ,so the motivation and the manner are totally different from ordinary agriculture .

Although the basic concept of Permaculture also applies to Organic and sustainable farming,

Utilizing soil management ,and mulching

The utilization of space is more concentrated ,thinking in cubic and vertical terms instead or merely horizontal on the plain ,

Having many principle to follow such as utilizing all resources and following and enhancing energy flows ,

for example the ditch around the house catches the rain water and leads it through the chicken house where it cleans and picks up the manure to deposit it in the vegetable patch

Permaculture means permanent agriculture

a concept put forward by Bill Mollison in the 60`s

Which offers practical solutions for energy systems ,infrastructure ,intelligent design in housing,

animal shelter ,water systems and sustainable agricultural practices.

With the world and it`s history as it`s source

From the chinampas of Mexico to the terraced gardens of the Andes.

From the dessert wadis to the steppes of Russia.

Covering all climatic conditions temporal, dessert, humid and dry tropics.

with chapters on soil ,Water harvesting and land design,Bio diversity

Earth working ,Spirals in nature,Trees and water ,utilizing energy flows,

Strategy for an alternative nation

including gardening tips,bio-gas,companion planting and ideas for structures ,how to cool down houses in hot climates ,how to warm up houses in cold climates with out using technology but rather by design.

Reply:Well, In some ways that's a negative image of the post oil age, and in some ways positive, there's a remarkable lack of civil disorder and tribalism. It is a stark explaination for why there was this year's Arctic oil rush.

There would be more energy and less reliance on imported oil and no need to export food If renewable energies are put into action.

I see no reason why the rest of the world should be suffering more. In fact lower development levels will be an advantage seeing as there will be more knowledge neccessary for the new realities of life and thierinfrastructure will not be so centralised and delicate.

I can also point you in the direction of Permaculture, this could improve the situation in the suburbs, and possibly more besides.
Reply:It is interesting that Asimov discounts the development of other sources of energy such as wind power that are no more costly to produce than electricity produced by fossil fuels.

All of our power needs cound be met by windpower. We could have electric cars if we chose. We could heat our homes with electric power produced by windpower.

Asimov gives us an unrealistically pessimistic view because he does not recognize that the fossil fuel sources that we use can be replaced by wind power. We have a large excess of wind power available in the United States all we have to do is build and install the wind turbines to harvest that power.

In virtually every country in the world there is far more windpower available than could ever be used by even the most wasteful and profligate people.

It is time to start building and installing the wind turbines to harvest that power.
Reply:Permaculture:

I consider that there would be much more social unrest than the picture paints, otherwise it is a possible future, perhaps too optimistic?

We have grown so reliant on oil, that few of us can even start to imagine what life may be like without it. Permaculture offers some solutions, certainly town and cities would need to be redesigned to facilitate food and fuel production; timber. In the countryside people would I consider would wholeheartedly embrace the energy efficient techniques of Permaculture.

It is the suburban landscape that would be different, the priority would again be to have cottage gardens, producing food and timber with orchards where there was space. So imagine lawns disappear, an abundance of wildlife and food production becoming much more the responsibility of individuals than for some time.

In England, as in other countries, the last real campaign for home food production was the Dig For Britain campaign in the Second World War. The British rally round in a crisis.

Cuba is one of the best examples of a nation that had to take action due to the problems associated with loss of oil and well worth a look at the links below. Public spaces were planted with crops and the whole nation's ideology shifted.

Certainly there will still be a massive demand for 'commercially' produced food, home crops fail, people are ill/old/too young. It is here where I really see the problems. The Agriculture business relies on heavy power use. Without oil, or another ???? equivalent how are we going to produce enough food on a large scale without using the energy we produce to fuel the machines we need to produce it?

The second problem of course is that we are still not taking this problem seriously enough. We should be preparing now, take global warming out of the picture, looking at sustainability only. If we do not start using the 'energy/oil' now to set up and develop systems NOW, whilst we still have oil then it will be much, much, harder to do without it. Taking something as simple as making contours, chinampas or terracing in Permaculture. It is a half a day job with a digger, without the fuel? Weeks and weeks of hard labour by hand.

Instead people are allowed to waste this precious resource with the belief it is not going to happen in their lifetime.

So What is Permaculture?:

Permaculture is to live ethically and sustainably so we have to understand eco systems and how the natural world works. The key is to understand that we are a single system; not separate. Whatever we do locally affects other people and the environment globally. Local solutions provide the best answers, we have different climates, soils, flora and fauna. Different needs, wants, tradition and cultures. But by acting locally we must keep an eye on the Horizon by limiting the damage on the environment and people globally. For example Global Warming affects us all.

Permaculture seeks to design ways of meeting man's needs by creating permanent high-yielding agricultural ecosystems. It is a solution aimed at how people can live on the smallest amount of land possible. The natural landscape (the rest, the wilderness is then not used by man) it is then left alone to heal and so it functions holistically.

Local responsibility ensures that people become as auto sufficient as possible both individually and as trading communities. Man is responsible for meeting his own needs for fuel, food and dealing with his own outputs and wastes.

Timber is grown on site in mixed native woodlands. This enriches the local ecosystem but its basis is the opposition of meeting man's needs by deforestation of the remaining natural and ancient forests/woodlands. Permaculture is a system of observation and least possible intervention both in terms of the home and the wilderness. It's leading principle is that eco-systems will naturally re-balance if left alone.

Hence the desire to create high yielding 'homesteads' to meet man's needs as efficiently as possible. By creating our own mini high yielding systems for our own use we use the least amount of everything possible. The Ethics of Permaculture are: Earth Care this is simply working with nature not against it. Limiting consumption and self limiting family size so there is less demand on natural systems/finite resources/finite land.

People Care

By being as self reliant as possible we do not exploit others, nor the land. Permaculture seeks to provide Permanent Agriculture. For example trees that are planted today on the 'homestead' will be inheritance for your grandchildrens' generation. Mixed woodlands of native trees on the homestead are managed so they provide food and fuel but the key principle is PERMANENT culture. You are investing in the future but having your needs met as ethically as possible whilst providing a legacy for future generations.

Fair Shares

One earth it is socially just to share with everyone, all other living things and with future generations. By limiting our consumption of everything including family size it supports the needs of everyone throughout the world to have access to clean water, clean air, food, shelter, fair and living wage, community etc.

Links not all are 'pure' Permaculture, but the links at the end are essential knowledge as the ideas are used in Permaculture.
